About Me:

I'm a Fine Art student at Manchester Metropolitan University, School of

Art.

I had an artistic influence from my grandmother from the early age of 3. I also used to live with her and spent long sunny hours in her gardens doing landscaping, planting, pruning and enjoying nature.

I was a self-taught artist until the age of 30 when I decided to apply to art school in Manchester where I started with a Foundation course, then went onto do a BA (hons) Fine Art degree with them. I am now in my 2nd year and will be graduating in June 2018.

In February 2017 I applied for the Erasmus Exchange program and was accepted into Willem De Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, Netherlands. I spent 6 months there, working on 4 different projects given to us, starting with a 1hour exhibition titled 'Barriers', then we were tasked to produce a publication based on the exhibition as our 2nd assignment. Followed by a public action project which involved a public exhibition outside of the walls of university, titled 'BODIES OF___'. Our last assignment was another community driven project which was hosted by RET the metro transport company of the Netherlands, in which Exchange and Fine Art students were given the opportunity to come up with a proposal for a visual work of art for their metro station, Gerdesiaweg in Rotterdam. It has been a great honour to be shortlisted for this design contest and we are looking forward to the announcement of the winning proposal. The outcome will be that RET will realise your proposal, the student will be invited back to Rotterdam to make the final piece, and the artwork will be displayed in Gerdesiaweg station for a year. My proposal is titled 'RET Connects'.

This Exchange has given me the opportunity to explore a different culture and country, due to the similarities in my mother tongue language, Afrikaans and the Dutch language, I found it easier than others to integrate into the society in Rotterdam. My Dutch roots and passion for flowers made this country of choice a favourable one and I am grateful to have had this experience.
